SBR Technical Information
Plasterers Blend SBR – Technical Data
Not all SBR is the same. Plasterers Blend SBR is formulated specifically for plastering and construction applications. Our unique polymer selection delivers superior sealing, bonding, and cost efficiency compared to standard SBR products.
Polymer Chemistry Explained
-
SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) is produced by co-polymerising styrene and butadiene.
-
Styrene Content: Higher styrene = better rigidity and adhesion.
-
Butadiene Content: Higher butadiene = more flexibility, crack resistance, and durability.
-
Additional Co-Polymers: Acrylates or vinyl acetate can add water repellence, UV resistance, and substrate bonding.
Performance Benefits
Sealing Performance
-
High butadiene content reduces micro-cracking.
-
Hydrophobic co-polymers improve water resistance – ideal for external plastering.
Bonding Performance
-
Styrene-rich SBR delivers strong adhesion to concrete, brick, and blockwork.
-
Carboxylated SBR provides chemical bonding with cement for added strength.
Plasterers Blend SBR – Polymer Strategy
Bonding to substrate – Moderate styrene + carboxylation → Strong adhesion to masonry
Crack resistance – High butadiene content → Flexibility under thermal stress
Water resistance – Hydrophobic co-polymer → Reduced permeability
Workability – Optimised particle size & solids → Smooth application, reduced drag
Cost efficiency – Balanced polymer loading (5–10%) → High performance at low dosage
Commercial & Practical Advantages
-
Higher solids content compared to many competitors
-
Clear differentiation from “commodity” SBR products
-
Proven performance in UK & international markets
-
Growing demand from builders’ merchants nationwide
-
Premium branding supported by thousands of positive customer reviews
Plasterers Blend exemplifies how thoughtful polymer engineering can deliver superior plastering results with minimal material waste and reduced application time.
Summary
Plasterers Blend SBR is not just another bonding agent. It is engineered through careful polymer chemistry to deliver stronger adhesion, greater flexibility, and longer-lasting protection than standard SBR. With proven merchant success, consistent demand, and a growing brand reputation, Plasterers Blend is setting a new benchmark in plastering additives.
Collapsible content
Is the SBR suitable for interior and exterior surfaces?
Yes. The SBR is suitable for all aspects of internal plastering and external rendering, as a primer. The Stabilising Solution can also be used for interior and exterior surfaces.
Can SBR be used instead of PVA
Yes. Our specially formulated blend of SBR can be used instead of PVA to give you the strongest possible bond on a wide range of surfaces.
Do I use SBR neat or mix with water?
Yes. Plasterers Blend SBR has an advanced blend of polymers to create the strongest possible bond, apply SBR neat for best results.
How much coverage do you get from a 5 litre tub of SBR?
Approximately 50m2 dependant on background. Further coverage on silk backgrounds, less coverage on bare undercoat plaster.
How long do I leave SBR to dry?
Low suction backgrounds - ready to plaster in as little as 15mins, as soon as the SBR is tacky you can plaster. Alternatively, the SBR can be left to fully dry if you prefer - it will remove any suction once dry.
High suction backgrounds - leave to fully dry and cure 6+ hours or overnight wherever possible.
Once I have applied SBR how long can it be left before plastering?
Fully dry SBR can be left primed for up to 6 months without loss of use.
Is Pink SBR just normail SBR with added dye?
No. Plasterers Blend SBR is a SBR based product which does have a dye in it. However there is a big difference in the formula, our SBR has been specially created with careful, advanced polymer chemistry, to ensure we have the strongest primer on the market.
Why is this SBR worth paying extra for?
Plasterers Blend SBR allows you to tackle almost any tricky background with ease. Whatever surface you are faced with, this one product offers a solution. Saving you time, effort, stress and a trip to the merchants for extra products, should you be faced with something unexpected.
